I follow advice that’s meant for musicians because they are, in many ways, the canary in the coal mine of popular culture. Pay close attention and you’ll see that any issues facing creative types now were already floating around in the world of music some five or ten years ago.
It’s 5:30 PM on a Monday. I’m headed to a sweatbox of a classroom to set up for an evening class that I never requested and certainly don’t want. With most of the students at dinner, I will have a brief time to myself…or so I think. I can feel eyes on me as I walk in — two, three, maybe four sets. A group of students are in here eating, and I need to chase them out before I can do anything else.
This is something we rarely discuss in society, even in the kind of political circles where gun control is a major issue. The focus is always on homicides — the more dramatic, the better. Suicides just don’t rate in the discussion. But when we ignore gun suicides, we blot out some 23,000 deaths per year.
